New Urban Arts Mission and Vision
While my internship is at Central High School, we are a part of New Urban Arts so I chose to focus on the organization as a whole rather than just my specific section.
NUA Mission Statement: Founded in 1997, New Urban Arts is a nationally-recognized community arts studio for high school students and emerging artists in Providence, Rhode Island. Our mission is to build a vital community that empowers young people as artists and leaders to develop a creative practice they can sustain throughout their lives.
Our free, year-round out-of-school programs promote sustained mentoring relationships between urban high school students and trained artist mentors—who, together, engage in youth leadership, risk taking, collaboration, and self-directed learning. We are grounded in the belief that in order to fulfill the promise of our democracy, all young people, no matter their place in society, should have the opportunity to become more creative and independent thinkers.

To me this means that NUA is built on the belief that all students regardless of their background or demographic should be able to collaborate with artists to build skills and become more creative members of society. NUA also stresses that these programs are all free for students.
There is no specific place of their website that states mission or vision statement just that one specific line that says "Our mission" in their "about" section of the website. I think it would be an improvement to also point out where their vision statement is as they have other sections like "our values" so a vision statement could easily be added in. I felt as though the second paragraph was nice to add is as it is a continuation of the mission statement and could potentially be considered a vision statement as well.

Thanks for sharing Kelly. I had no idea what New Urban Arts was. It sounds like a great program.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about that there should be a specific place for the mission statement just so it’s easier to find.
Thanks for your post Kelly. I am intrigued by the paragraph you included and the emphasis that NUA places on leadership risk-taking, creativity, and independent thinking, etc. They don't focus on art skills (like developing screen printing skills that can help with job placements), but rather situate art education in a different context. Do you agree and if so, how would you articulate the role of art education in this mission?
