HSLI Snow Day Project

The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative provides diverse learning opportunities to youth in areas where summer learning is not as prominent and/or lacking. HSLI addresses the learning decline in core subjects like math and reading in fun summer camp settings. From what I can tell the YDEV Anchors and Ideologies that HSLI aligns with are; purposeful play because youth can have fun in the garden planting and growing vegetables but then they also use those vegetables in recipes to make salsa and have to measure and multiply, I also see care and community and there could potentially be some leading with. This is also definitely a positive youth development space.

From the RFP it seems as though any school in Rhode Island who offers summer school programs is able to apply for a few different grants as long as they can provide the information required. I'm sure they look more in depth into the needs of the program and youth in that area as well, for example I'm sure in my cookie cutter town that is Little Compton as much as we might want that type of grant we don't really need it because there are many more opportunities for our youth through the school, community center, and their parents.

HLSI partners with community groups like; The United Way, After School Leadership Circle, Connecting for Children and Families, National Summer Learning Association, Save the Bay and The Audubon Society and the schools, teachers and towns their programs are connected with. The main components required in the grant proposal are; data and outcomes (in key performance areas), collaboration (with the main partner, school and community, educators), curriculum structure (what does the day/week/summer look like), professional development, sustainability, demonstrate success, and documentation.

+ I think this program is awesome and definitely has the data to show that it works. I think the gardening program and their partnership with Save the Bay and The Audubon Society is great.

Δ I would change that their wasn't something like this when I was in summer camps!

— I think a minus for me is from what I can tell in the RFP, the program only lasts for one summer and then they must reapply for the next year. I could be wrong on that but if it is correct and a program isn't funded again the next summer that could really be a disservice to those youth.
