The Nellie Mae Education Foundation
The Nellie Mae Education Foundations Mission is: To stimulate transformative change of public education systems across New England by growing a greater variety of higher quality educational opportunities that enable all learners—especially and essentially underserved learners—to obtain the skills, knowledge and supports necessary to become civically engaged, economically self-sufficient life-long learners.
Their summary of their history states that: The Nellie Mae Education Foundation, New England’s largest public charity focused solely on education, has worked for over 20 years to help our region prosper by preparing all of its learners for success.
And has multiple milestones with brief summaries with things like this: 2001-2007
Nellie Mae Foundation becomes the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, launching four strategic initiatives: Adult Learning, College Prep, Minority High Achievement, and “Out-of-School Matters!”
After spending a lot of time on the website I could not seem to find where exactly the money comes from, I was able to locate their tax forms and financial statements but nothing seemed to state exactly where the money was coming from.
The Nellie Mae Education Foundations Grants fund multiple things and states that: The Nellie Mae Education Foundation supports the people and organizations who contribute to making public schools the best they can be-including, teachers and administrators, policy makers and thought leaders. They do not fund individuals but fund schools and programs in the New England area.
Here is and example of one of their grants in action
SUPPORTING EDUCATORS
Through our Building Educator Ownership, Leadership and Capacity Initiative, we’re aiming to empower educators to implement high quality, rigorous and equitable student-centered practices in their classrooms and districts through projects like principal and teacher fellowships.
Spreading Blended Learning
The Foundation is supporting the Highlander Institute’s FUSE-RI Fellowship Program, which trains educators and administrators in the design, implementation, and support of personalized learning initiatives, and then partners them with schools around Rhode Island to assess readiness and help disseminate the best blended learning practices based on each district’s specific needs.
A Competency-Based Educator Program
The Foundation is supporting the Woodrow Wilson Academy of Teaching and Learning - a pioneering graduate school and education lab innovating around competency-based teacher education in the STEM subjects. Learn more
I have two questions about the foundation the first is where does this grant money come from and what (if any) changes have they made to their mission and vision of the organization.
